5 Minute DIY Hand Sanitizer

Every store in a 25-mile radius of my home is completely sold out of hand sanitizer! I went to 4 different local stores, the last store I visited prior to heading home was Walgreens! And like all the other stores I visited, they were out too! AAAGGGHHH! Prior to leaving, I spoke to a Walgreen’s employee, she said, “Hand sanitizer is a hot item in demand right now, we can’t keep them on the shelves for too long!”

I decided to go home and try my luck online. On Amazon, I found a package of 4, 10oz hand sanitizer! It was like finding pirate treasure! “Woohhhoooo”… that was until I scrolled down the page and saw the price! My “Woohhoooo”, quickly turned into utter shock and disbelief, followed up with heart wrenching pain when I saw the price: $18 American Buckaroos and 99 cents for a pack of 4 bottles of hand sanitizer or ($4.74)  for each bottle! C’mon! Really!? Seriously?!

Now, this hand sanitizer is your everyday garden variety-nothing special hand sanitizer! Usually for this size hand sanitizer, it is priced any where from $1.00 to 1.10, a bottle at any store, but NOT $4.74!!!! This highway robbery is called Price Gouging! This absurd overly priced hand sanitizer definitely gouged my heart with fury-like pain having to pay $4.74 for one bottle each!

Due to our global situation of what’s going on with the Corona Virus, I was at a cross roads in my head:

  • Do I pay this insanely loca price for hand sanitizer and have it available for us to use?

Or

  • Do I complain about how much it is, not buy it at all and having no alternative to clean hands when soap and water is not available to us?

I did the most practical, logical, sensible thing to do for myself and family…I right swiped the yellow Amazon, “Buy Now” button. I bought one package of 4 of overly priced hand sanitizer! Despite making this purchase, I did not agree with paying $4.74 for one bottle –  and I still don’t!

After settling down, and my blood pressure at a normal range again of 120/80, I looked for hand sanitizer recipes, there are so many to choose from, and all share the same basic ingredients: 70% to 90% rubbing alcohol and aleo vera, and essential oils. I also found recipes that add in tea tree, hazel witch and glycerin. Looking around my house, I have ingredients to make hand sanitizer!

These are the websites that I referenced in  making my own hand sanitizer.

This is the recipe I came up with making hand sanitizer.  It took 5 minutes to whip up on the kitchen counter:

*2/3 cup ( 1/3 cup + 1/3 cup) of 70% or  91% rubbing alcohol*

2/3 cup ( 1/3 cup + 1/3 cup) of aloe vera gel

25 drops of tea tree oil

In a round medium size bowl, mix all ingredients together with a spoon. Mixture will have a gel-like consistency. Use a funnel (I used a **chopstick to push it down the funnel) to pour into travel sized 3oz. lotion containers If you don’t have travel sized containers, repurpose plastic lotion or squirt bottles.

This recipe makes a total of 9 ounces or 3, 3oz travel size lotion bottles

*If you can’t find 70% to 90% rubbing alcohol, you can use witch hazel as a substitution.

**You can use a medicine dropper or syringe instead of a funnel
