Video Editing with KDenlive

Hello and Hafa Adai My Friends

I worked on my first-ever YouTube Video Edit using KDenLive Version 20.08.0 ! At first glance, I was intimidated by all the shiny buttons – not understanding their purpose or functionality.

It took me about 5 hours of trial and error to edit an 11-ish minute video of folding origami! These hours involved 8 cups of coffee, 1-1/2 tubs of Magnum, a notebook, pen (for note taking) and a Youtube video tutorial on how to edit a video –  Kdenlive Tutorial #2 | Basic Timeline Editing | Selection, Razor (cut), Remove Space

My take aways from my first 5 hours of working in KDenLive:

+ The basic tools to editing a video are these 3 tools:

  1. Selection
  2. Razor
  3. Spacer

+ A really good computer mouse

A really good computer mouse is necessary while editing on a timeline to find specific timestamps. I could not find my mouse prior to editing – so I used my laptop touchpad – that was no bueno for work efficiency!!!!!

I also found this KDenlive Useful Shortcuts list to be very helpful .

Before editing my first video, the first thing I needed to do was to import video footage on to my laptop, then, created folders in KDenlive and named them accordingly. From there, using a mouse drag, I pulled video content from its folder onto the timeline to edit – then the real work began (or should I say, the tears!)

In a previous post, I quoted the following statement: “I have convinced myself the level of difficulty is way up there, beyond the clouds…beyond the moon”. I was not lying! The level of difficulty was high, it was way beyond this girl’s brain of comprehension! KDenLive Software is not a user-friendly software to the unexperienced!

However, now that I completed my first 5 hours of using video editing software with absolutely no experience and or knowledge –  I think I did pretty good, and I NOW know more than I did before getting started.

Since scrubbing video footage and making all necessary edits, I now need to add in my introduction, outroduction, and music. The final product will be approximately 6 minutes?

Just like anything, I need to invest consistent effort and time into my video editting work, soon with time my quality of work will be cleaner, my efficiency will be fluid. I look forward to editing YouTube videos quicker 10-12 minutes, instead of 5 hours!
